A Message from Father
Robert E. Wood, Rector Emeritus To Worship, To Serve, To Learn
Welcome to the St. Paul's Website. We are delighted to have you on line. I hope that you will find this means of communication useful for staying abreast of the wonderful things that are happening in our parish as we carry out our mission "To Worship, To Serve, To Learn."
For the benefit to those of you who are new to St. Paul's, I will share a bit about us to give you an idea of who we are. St. Paul's began as a Westport storefront, and for 110 years has been an important and active anchor in the midtown area. During this long history, St. Paul's has never deviated from its mission to serve its congregation and its community and to remain a strong presence in the urban core. Through the years, the congregation has worked hard to meet the changing needs of its neighbors. This is seen in our ministry in the 1920s of a children's orphanage established by the parish, to its work during the 1960s with young people caught in the drug culture of the era. Today, we offer Meals on Wheels for elderly neighbors, a Food Pantry and a Family Literacy Program. In 1963, St. Paul's established a small Episcopal Day School at the church, serving about 40 young children. In 1992, the school had grown to more than 400 students in preschool through 8th grade. When the school was destroyed by fire that fall, the school board and vestry immediately voted to rebuild and to remain in midtown, although some thought it might be more profitable to move the school south. That decision reflects our mission today, to provide quality programs for students, for our congregation, and for our neighbors in this urban area.
This is something of who we are and what we hope to continue to be as we seek the challenges of being faithful servants in the Body of Christ at 40th and Main. If you are looking for a church where you feel welcomed and can be engaged with others who seek to be a servant church in the urban core, please come and join us "To Worship, To Serve, and To Learn." We have a casual Saturday worship service at 5:00 PM and our Sunday worship services are at 8:00 and 10:30 AM.
Faithfully yours,
The Reverend Robert E. Wood, Rector
St. Paul's Episcopal Church and Day School
