Elementary School
Aged Children
Our age
groups are broken into three groupings
creating a community where children with
similar skills and readiness can learn
together using age-appropriate curriculum.
Grades 1-2:
This group meets in the room we refer to as Mary
and Martha’s Bed and Breakfast. Upon entering you
may feel that you have entered the home and
hospitality of these two biblical women from whom
it is named. Children in this group learn by
hands-on
experiences often set up in centers. Children
this age group can sense God is great and good.
They have many questions about our world, the
causes and purposes of things around them. After
hearing the story from the lectionary-based
curriculum, Living the Good News, or
All Things New, children may engage in and
supporting art project, skit, game, or writing
activities. These curriculums incorporate fine
art, great music and wonderful literature opening
fresh windows onto the Sunday readings.
Grades 3-4:
This group meets in the room that we refer to as
The Haiti Room. Upon entering you will notice the
bright Caribbean colors and interesting
multicultural theme. Haiti is an important
mission of St. Paul’s so we feel it appropriate
to have a room with this theme. Children in this
group also learn through hands-on opportunities
and begin to respond to God in personal ways.
Discussion becomes more in-depth. The children
have a concrete conception of religion-it must
deal with real things so our discussions are
often directed in this direction. This group can
understand Jesus and his teachings a life on
earth so discussion is often centered on what
Jesus taught as he walked with his disciples on
earth. This class also uses the lectionary-based
curriculum, Living the Good News. Children
have opportunity to experience the lesson through
art, journaling and drama. This group of children
is prime for learning to live their faith out
through outreach. This year we will integrate the
curriculum Growing a Grateful, Generous Heart
into our daily walk of faith. This class
does periodic outreach activities for Meals on
Wheels, and the Pantry.
Grade 5:
This class meets in a creative and center-based
environment. The children dig deeper in this
class learning the stories and parables of the
bible, the books of the bible, and how to use the
bible and Book of Common Prayer. Life application
is central to this class as these youth approach
the challenging years ahead of them. Discussion
is applied toward learning to make good choices
in a world filled with many challenges for our
children. The curriculum is lectionary based and
uses a combination of Living the Good News
and media clips from sources such as Velocity
and a host of other biblical resources.
