Haiti

Develop a Mind, Develop a Country

See photos from our 2007 trip to Haiti!

When St. Paul's became involved with the Haiti Outreach program at Ravine a-L'Anse in 1988, there were no children in school there, and no health supervision. Today there are 215 students in school, nine teachers, and a full-time health worker who is also the school master. The first years, classes were held in the church and outside in makeshift lean-tos. We have now built the Robert S. Staples Memorial School at St. Croix, Ravine a-L'Anse, with eight classrooms, a storage building and a latrine.

Our funding for Haiti is through private donations from St. Paul's parishioners and friends. We are able to pay the tuition for 165 students, the salaries for the teachers and the health worker. This past year, we have been able to hire a Haitian-trained nurse through the generosity of a St. Paul's parishioner.

Kansas City physicians and health care workers visit Haiti annually at their own expense. They donate medicine and medical supplies, provide immunizations, offer health and nutrition education, offer nutrition programs and counseling about family planning. They evaluate the work of Haitians who are active in health care in villages. St. Paul's parishioners, clergy, Day School families and Day school personnel often accompany the medical team on their trips.
